At the triennial EuroShop trade fair, organised in Düsseldorf, Germany, in mid February, was on site to report about the latest CO2 technology developments on show, and gather information on the latest trends in the commercial refrigeration sector. In part 2 of our EuroShop coverage, reviews the high number of products on show from CO2 component suppliers, including compressors, system controllers and gas detection sensors.

CO2 controllers and valves on display at EuroShop 2014
Carel: One of the leading system controller manufacturers for the retail sector, Carel had on display a number of solutions designed and developed for those retailers leading the way and investing in integrated CO2 refrigeration systems, including the pR300T controller, for pumped, cascade and booster systems, and their high pressure expansion valve.
Speaking in an interview on the EuroShop published on the website, Nicolas Wagner, Director of Sales and Cooling Technology Retail Support, Carel said: “CO2 is definitely an excellent choice as a transcritical option considering global warming potential, that being greenhouse gas emissions... Since R-404A can soon no longer be used as a refrigerant, CO2 has been able to establish itself well in different versions of the entire installation. Investment costs per cooling unit have drastically decreased by now and the technology has also become more manageable.”
Danfoss: Continuously strengthening CO2 portfolio, the Danfoss booth showcased their range of components for CO2 systems, including:
  • New solution for real-time COP measurements: the AK-LM 350 COP enables Coefficient of Performance measurement of refrigeration plants including CO2 booster and cascade systems. The monitoring unit is equipped with data communication and is operated via a computer. Pack controller: for small CO2 booster systems, the AK-PC 772 provides control for 3 MT and 2 LT compressors, and features an integrated high-pressure receiver and gas cooler control.
  • Pressure transmitter: compatible with CO2, the AKS 2050 has a built-in voltage stabiliser and selective temperature compensation.
  • Electrically operated valves: for CO2 systems Danfoss displayed the AKVH with ECC Coil, the CCM, which has a working pressure up to 90 bar and precise positioning, and the CCMT, for CO2 systems with a maximum working pressure of 140 bar.
  • High pressure expansion valves: The ICMT/ICAD is designed for high pressure systems, for a maximum working pressure of 140 bar.
Eliwell: On show at the booth were the new EWCM EO controllers, which allow retailers to manage cold room compressors reducing consumption to a minimum. All 8000/9000 series models are fully configurable by the user to manage digital compressors and inverter, digital fans and inverter, up to 2 circuits. The flexible solution is suited to various plant configurations including sub-critical CO2 cascade plants and glycol plants.
CO2 compressors on show EuroShop 2014
Dorin: the Italian compressor specialist displayed several of their semi-hermetic CO2 products, including from the CD400 range, which includes 21 compressors models with a displacement ranging from 9.48m3/H to 33.23 m3/h, and from the CD 2S 400 range, which includes 5 compressors models, with a displacement range from 7.71 + 5.06 m3/h to 15.11 + 8.98 m3/h
GEA Bock: For CO2 refrigeration, the innovative highlight at this year’s fair was the extensive compressor range for CO2 applications including the HGX34P/255-4, the HGX12P/50-4, the HGX34/230-4 ML, and the HGX46/345-4S.
Bitzer: in response to the growing importance of CO2 as a refrigerant, BITZER is steadily extending its CO2 product range, and had on display at their 4MTC-10.F4 and the new 4CTC-30K semi-hermetic reciprocating compressors for transcritical applications, designed for higher displacement. Also on show as the 2NSL-05K semi-hermetic reciprocating compressor for sub-critical CO2 applications, cascade CO2 systems, and booster CO2 systems.
Emerson: prominently on display at the Emerson booth was information about the Retail Solutions Europe business, which offers full engineering services design with innovative facilities management to the retail sector. As part of the display was a “CO2 solutions” section, featuring the stream series compressor with CoreSense diagnostics for CO2 transcritical applications. Designed for medium and low temperature applications the product has an inverter release of 25-70 Hz.
CO2 gas detection and air coolers on display at EuroShop
Danfoss: The company’s gas detection sensor DGS was on show, which can be stand alone or used as part of a Danfoss ASAP-KOOL system.
KIMESSA: The fixed gas monitoring and control systems specialist had on display their CO2-detector KSIM 1090.

Guntner: the wall/ceiling CO2 CXGHF gas cooler was on show, which has a capacity of 1 – 40 kW. The system provides economical room cooling, and features a drip tray to prevent the formation of condensation water.
