Natural cooling solutions were abundant at the Chillventa trade fair in Nuremburg, Germany this month. Exhibitors from around the world showed off their innovative products, including CO2-cooled ice machines. +PHOTOS
Chillventa 2014 brought together an astounding amount of CO2 cooling technology from 14-16 October in Nuremburg, Germany. Among the leading manufacturers displaying CO2 icemakers were Higel, MAJA, Scotsman Ice and Ziegra.
Higel Kältetechnik e K: Higel presented two flake ice machines from its series of naturally cooled products. The compact HEC 3000 has an approximate production capacity of 3000 kg / 24 hours at -18°C ambient temperature and 12°C water feed temperature. Also on display at the Higel booth was their HEC 800, which also uses R744 to produce 800 kg of flake ice in 24 hours.
MAJA: MAJA, a world leading manufacturer of flake ice machinery, boasts more than 50 years’ experience producing machines namely for the meat processing industry. MAJA’s RVH CO2-D is specifically designed for direct carbon dioxide operation, which brings more power density and thus increases ice capacity up to 30% compared with the same machine scale using a different refrigerant such as R404A. In addition, the system includes an electronic expansion valve for optimum evaporation efficiency and is able to produce 500-3800 kg of ice per 24 hours. Aside from this system, MAJA will individually configure its other ice machine models to meet any special requirements, including using natural refrigerants instead of the standard cooling fluid.
Scotsman Ice Systems: Scotsman Ice has been producing icemakers since the 1950s, with over a million Scotsman icemakers at work around the world today. The machines are designed for a range of applications including hotels, restaurants, bars, supermarkets, and fast-food outlets, and can produce a myriad of types of ice including cubes, flake, super flake, scale, nugget and dice, among others. Two models of Scotsman Ice machines, the MF 59 Split and the MF 69 Split, are designed to use CO2 as the working fluid. The use of R744 has allowed production ratings to be raised by as much as 30% as compared to the same models using conventional refrigerants. The modular super-flake ice machines feature a stainless steel scotch-brite finish and removable side panels to ease maintenance. The MF 59 can produce up to 850 kg of super-flake ice, and the MF 69 can produce up to 1600 kg.
Ziegra: Ziegra’s new icemakers using CO2 refrigeration systems combine the benefits of eco-friendly CO2 refrigeration with quality. The ZBE CO2 range is energy efficient thanks to the higher evaporation temperatures of CO2. The line of icemakers has a production capacity ranging from 350 kg/24 h to 1,200 kg/24 h, depending on the model. Ziegra icemaker designs meet hygiene requirements approved worldwide.
