Panasonic's CO2 heating system improves performance and reduces system size

shecco’s GUIDE to Natural Refrigerants in China showed that the use of CO2 is present in many different sectors, including light commercial and commercial refrigeration and industrial refrigeration. A case study presented by Panasonic shows that there are other applications using CO2, including their CO2 low temperature heat pump heating systems.

The GUIDE to Natural Refrigerants in China’s special supporter, Panasonic, presented three case studies that show the use of CO2 as a refrigerant in the Chinese market. The first case study showed Panasonic’s CO2 2-stage rotary compressor, which is the world’s first such compressor and has already amassed sales of 700,000 worldwide. The second case study focused on the use of CO2 in their heat pump water heating system and the third, and the focus of this article, was on the use of CO2 in their low-temperature heat pump heating system.

Use of CO2 in low temperature heat pump heating system

Panasonic presented and detailed their heating system at their new motor assembling workshop, which contains a heating area of 4,140m2, 1,350m2 of this being a working area where staff operate. The purpose of the heating system was to utilise the high efficiency of air source heat pumps and the environmentally friendly virtues of CO2 as well as its efficient operation in low-ambient temperatures. The project used these instruments to combine three elements, which were a CO2 air source heat pump unit, a water supplying system and a fabric air ventilation system. In total the heating system has a capacity of around 140kW and is used to provide heating to every workstation.

The system contains six CO2 air source heat pump units, with each unit containing four 33F series DC inverter twin rotary compressors, also manufactured by Panasonic Appliances Compressor (Dalian) Co., Ltd. To enable the system to provide specified heating to each individual workstation, it utilises electronic controls. It also uses a closed-loop water cycle that is applied to the water supply system with a high thermal efficiency to help reduce the size of the water pump, improving the logistical properties of the installation.

The system provides extra space and improved efficiency

The end result is that due to the implementation of the system:

  • The split design which uses an outdoor unit also removes the need for a machine or boiler room
  • The split design helps save space and is easy to install
  • Overall efficiency is much higher compared to previous electric heating system
  • PLC and touch screen used to control heating system ensuring a reliable, safe and steady operation for the entire system
