ATMOsphere Asia 2016 selects naturals case studies

With our annual ATMOsphere event series kicking off less than a month from now, we’re putting the final touches to the programme of ATMOsphere Asia 2016. This year, participants arriving in Tokyo will enjoy an impressive two-day programme boasting a record number of speakers, including 10 different technology case studies covering both commercial and industrial refrigeration technology.

With ATMOsphere Asia returning to Tokyo, Japan for the third time, next month will see the conference take over the Shin-Maru Conference Square on 9-10 February. Joining the already impressive line-up of expert speakers in policy, market-trend and end-user sessions are presenters of technology case studies.

The presentations will cover a range of different technologies with a focus on natural refrigerants used in a variety of applications. The following CO2-based case studies will be presented over both days of the conference.

High-efficient integrated CO2-based solutions around the world, Oliver Javerschek, BITZER



CO2 systems represent state-of-the-art technology in commercial refrigeration. However, the highest level of development is yet to be reached. The systems are increasingly turning into integrated solutions for low- and medium temperature loads as well as air conditioning and heating in order to cope efficiently with different ambient conditions and offering at the same time high annual energy efficiencies. This case study will highlight various projects in the world of COapplications. All introduced projects are characterised by innovative capacity, integrity, efficiency and sustainability.

Energy-saving effect of ejector technology, Masahiro Takatsu, DENSO



DENSO launched the first mass production-type ejector onto the market in 2003. The applications have since expanded to refrigerated trucks, CO2 heat pump water heaters, vehicle air conditioners, and CO2 refrigerant vending machines. This presentation will show the energy-saving effect and history of ejector development within DENSO.

CO2 booster system using mixed scroll/piston compressor technology, Abel Gnanakumar, Emerson



The presentation will cover how mixing scroll and semi-hermetic technology helps the industry to apply CO2 booster systems. Studies show that there is no special engineering required to mix the compressor technologies in building a booster pack, with the added benefit that scrolls offer easy-to-apply modulation and make the overall system more cost-effective.

Operating results of CO2/NH3 refrigeration system, Ryouhei Suzuki, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries

This case study will explain the product outline of C-LTS by showing the introduction of the system flow lineup and operating results on site. In addition, the latest installed examples of the CO2 hot water heater (Q-ton) will be presented. 
Mitsubishi Heavy Industries is experienced in the freezing device and refrigerator manufacturing business, with the CO2/ammonia refrigeration (C-LTS) series launched in 2005. 

Results of CO2 refrigeration systems for CVS and other applications, Yukio Yamaguchi, SANDEN



SANDEN’s cascade system with pressure control system certified that COrefrigeration system is applicable for Very High Temperature Conditions such as over 40 degrees C. SANDEN is a producer of hermetic CO2 compressors; the production of hermetic compressors started in 2011, and the accumulated production volume exceeds 1.5m compressors around the world. From 2014 to 2015, SANDEN delivered over 150 complete CO2 refrigeration systems for CVS in Japan. On top of that, SANDEN CO2 compressors are applied to air conditioning systems in the production facility. 



Results of heat exchangers operated in hard water conditions for CO2 heat pumps, Björn Felgenhauer (tbc), SWEP



A system will be presented which protects the heat exchanger from scaling so that it can be safely operated in tap water applications. Components are available - mainly due to the CO2 approach in industrialised countries, but the issue of water quality remains. Stratification is the key to increasing efficiency but at elevated temperatures will increase the risk of scaling. This case study will show test results of a heat exchanger operated in hard water conditions according to the taping standard DIN ISO 16147. The heat exchanger was operated with and without a passive back flush valve and even compared with existing tubes in a tube heat exchanger. Furthermore, we show the installation of a CO2 tap water heat pump using a passive back flush principle in real life conditions.

Energy efficiency of brine-ice thermal storage system using a new type of CO2 refrigeration unit, Toshiaki Hosono, Yamato



This study will present data on the performance of the Ultra Eco-Ice system with the new CO2 pressure adjust control system, first introduced to the market in 2015. The presentation will see the demonstration of three merits of this thermal storage equipped system versus standard direct expansion CO2 system. The merits include peak energy consumption reduction, improved COP of the system and reduced initial costs by the downsizing of the CO2 system.
