SCM Frigo's transcritical CO2 system installed at a cold storage facility in the Canary Islands
The first transcritical CO2 system for cold storage on the Canary Islands has been installed at a facility on Tenerife, the largest island, according to Italian CO2 rack manufacturer SCM Frigo.
The system, commissioned on June 3, provides 100 kW (28.4 TR) of cooling for the facility, which stores bananas, peppers, tomatoes, and pumpkins.
Installation was completed by local contractor RSA Instalaciones y Montajes — an industrial refrigeration and air conditioning system installer based in Tenerife.
The installer "wanted to supply the end user with a long-term solution that was energy efficient," said Alessandro Franchin, export area manager for SCM Frigo.
The transcritical CO2 rack's design conditions include -2°C (28.4°F) evaporating temperature and 38°C (100.4°F) gas cooler outlet temperature.
The rack uses two medium-temperature compressors and one intermediate-temperature parallel compressor.
The compressors were provided by Bitzer and controls were provided by Danfoss.
Franchin said that system performance and operation will be monitored over the next few months.
The first transcritical CO2 system installed in the Canary Islands was done by Epta Iberia at a supermarket in February 2019.
