Announced initially at the 2008 Chillventa trade fair in Germany, Daikin’s CO2 VRV system was subsequently displayed in trade fairs in Spain and France, while in the UK market, where CO2 technology is starting to pick up, Daikin is said to be in discussions with potential end users.

The launch of the world’s first CO2-based VRV (Variable Refrigerant Volume) system was announced by Daikin Europe N.V. at the latest edition of the Chillventa trade fair at Nuremberg, Germany in October 2008. Subsequently, the company displayed its CO2 VRV system at the Climatización trade fair in Madrid held between 24-27 February, while at the 3rd edition of the Enéo Energy, Climate Control and Water Management Exhibition held in Lyon, France, from 25 to 28 February 2009, Daikin was handed the Enéo d’or award for its CO2 solution.

In the UK market, where other Asian manufacturers such as SANYO are already active in providing CO2-based systems for heating applications, Daikin UK is said to be in discussions with potential end users which may result in the introduction of the system in the country in the near future.

System specifications

After having developed CO2-based Eco Cute domestic hot water system available in Japan, Daikin applied its engineering expertise to develop a VRF system using CO2 in transcritical cycle. The CO2 VRV system features:
  • Daikin dual compression swing compressor, able to handle high pressure differences.
  • A dual stage inter-cooler circuit that enables optimum refrigerant control & efficiency
  • A gas cooler with three-row heat exchanger for maximum heat exchange between the CO2 gas and the ambient air
  • An automatic test run function
  • Night quiet mode
  • Connectivity with all current VRV control & management systems
About Daikin

Daikin has been researching possible alternatives to HFC-based refrigerants as part of its approach to stay ahead of environmental legislation. Its CO2-based Eco Cute domestic hot water system and now the new CO2 VRV system limit the impact of HVAC on the environment. Daikin Europe N.V. is the sales and manufacturing head quarter for Europe, some parts of Africa and the Middle East.
