Metro AG Taps Carrier for Major CO2 Retrofit Program In Europe

Carrier will supply its transcritical technology to 760 Cash & Carry stores in deal completed at EuroShop.

Paris, France-based Carrier Commercial Refrigeration (CCR) has signed an agreement with German retail giant Metro AG to supply CO2 refrigeration systems to the majority of its European stores in a major retrofit program called the “Iceman” project.

The agreement was signed during last week’s EuroShop trade show in Düsseldorf, Germany.

Under the Iceman project, Metro aims to convert 760 of its Cash & Carry stores in Europe to transcritical CO2 refrigeration over the next three years. The project is part of Metro’s F-Gas Exit Program, initiated in 2013, which aims to reduce the company’s f-gas emissions by 90%, and its overall CO2 emissions by half, by 2030.

CCR will supply Metro AG with high-efficiency remote cabinets and cold rooms, along with its CO2OLtec Evo transcritical system with ejector technology and CO2 pumps.

Metro AG and CCR have jointly developed a “standardized concept” for cabinets and refrigeration systems focused on total cost of ownership “to drive cost and operational savings,” the companies said.

“The close cooperation between Carrier and Metro will accelerate Metro’s F-Gas Exit Program, resulting in a strong refrigerant losses reduction, lower electricity demand and substantial carbon footprint reductions for Metro’s customers, our climate, and our society,” said Olaf Schulze, Director of Energy Management Investments & Technical Solutions at Metro AG.

“Carrier is committed to providing Metro with the best refrigeration solution using a natural refrigerant, to support its mission to reduce emissions,” said David Moon, President of CCR. “Our innovative products combine sustainability, energy efficiency and promote ease of daily operations,” Moon added.

The agreement includes 24/7 service, including regular inspection, maintenance, and a connection to Carrier’s remote monitoring center.
