Seeking to help attendees keep up with the fast-paced changes across the HVAC&R industry, the 2024 AHR Expo (International Air-Conditioning, Heating, Refrigerating Exposition) will feature policy, industry and new product presentations and exhibits, including those related to CO2 (R744)-based systems.
The event ‒ held in Chicago, Illinois, January 22‒24 ‒ takes place concurrently with the ASHRAE (American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers) Winter Conference.
“We attract the top minds in the industry to keep you current on everything HVAC&R,” the event’s website says. “We’ll explore trending topics in all sectors of the industry, including AI & controls, decarbonization, plumbing & hydronics, heat pumps, refrigerants, workforce development, business & professional growth, and more.”
The AHR Expo, held annually since 1930, gathers contractors, educators, engineers, facility operators, OEMs and other industry professionals to explore the latest trends and applications and build beneficial relationships.
Policy and industrial sessions relating to natural refrigerants
The 2024 event includes over 100 policy and industrial sessions. Those relating to natural refrigerants include the following.
“Progress in Codes and Standards related to Natural Refrigerants (NH3 [ammonia (R717)], CO2, & HCs)” will be presented by Tony Lundell, Senior Director of Standards and Safety at the International Institute of Ammonia Refrigeration (IIAR), on Monday, January 22. “With the HFC phase-down, learn about natural refrigerants and specific applications to Significant New Alternatives Policy (SNAP) Approvals.”
“Building Tomorrow’s Cooling Workforce: Navigating New Technologies and Challenges” will be presented by Refrigeration Mentor on Monday, January 22. “Topics covered include cutting-edge developments in CO2 systems, green and energy-efficient solutions, climate change adaptation and the role of a skilled workforce.”
“CO2 a Well Revival Natural Refrigerant” will be presented by CIMCO Refrigeration on Tuesday, January 23. CIMCO showcases two different CO2 refrigerant applications in case studies of an ice rink and a CO2 cascade system with ammonia.
New natural refrigerant product presentations
With over 150 new product sessions, given in 20-minute presentations, the event features many new natural refrigerant technologies and solutions, including:
“Natural Refrigerant Solutions for Food Service and Retail Applications” will be presented by Rivacold America on Tuesday, January 23. Learn about “two new cutting-edge technologies” that integrate the company’s portfolio of natural refrigerant solutions designed for applications in the North American food service, food retail and cold storage markets.
“Heat Exchangers for CO2 Transcritical Applications” will be presented by Rodolfo Cavicchioli, Business Development Manager at LU-VE Group, on Wednesday, January 24.
“Adiabatic Cooling” will be presented by Güntner on Wednesday, January 24. Learn how adiabatic cooling helps reduce energy and water use while extending the cooling range of natural refrigerant systems.
“New Fixed Toxic Gas Detection & Refrigerant Monitoring,” will be presented by Seitron Americas on Wednesday, January 24. Attendees learn more about the company’s detection and monitoring services, including ammonia, butane (R600), CO2 and propane (R290) refrigerants.
2024 AHR innovation awards
Ahead of the event, AHR announced Innovation Award winners in ten categories. Award finalists included two natural refrigerant products.
A finalist in Building Automation, the CC220 controller manufactured by U.S.-based Copeland (formerly Emerson) provides case control for “all loads in any type of refrigeration display case or walk-in box,” Emerson said in a previous R744.com article.
A finalist in Heating, the “world’s first tankless heat pump water heater,” the iE1 Electron, manufactured by U.S.-based Intellihot, uses CO2 refrigerant. The unit provides 170°F (76.7°C) hot water on demand, with indoor or outdoor installation.
ATMO verified
Several exhibitors with ATMOsphere ‒ publisher of R744.com ‒ verified, reputable CO2 refrigeration products and services will attend the event.
Participating silver level R744.com partners include:
- U.S.-based Baltimore Aircoil Company, an adiabatic cooler and condenser manufacturer;
