On 15 August, German retail giant Aldi announced plans to convert all its UK stores to natural refrigerant CO2. By the end of 2018, up to 100 outlets will be equipped with natural refrigerant-based systems at an investment of some €22 million (£20m).
Thanks to this strategy, Aldi will see a reduction in its potential refrigerant gas carbon emissions by 99%.
Mary Dunn, communications director at Aldi UK, said: “By choosing natural refrigerants, we are reducing our impact on the environment while also assuring our stores are future-proofed for years to come.”

Up to 100 of Aldi’s circa-700 UK stores are set to incorporate CO2 refrigerants by the end of next year. All its existing UK stores will eventually be converted to CO2.
“We are continually looking for ways to improve our environmentally friendly credentials, and upgrading our entire stores to energy-efficient refrigeration is a key part of our commitment to being a responsible retailer,” said Dunn.
