U.S. HVAC&R manufacturer Carrier has published its 2021 Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) report, which reveals that the company has reduced its customers’ carbon footprint by 68 million metric tons in 2020.
A 68m ton reduction equals the energy use of more than eight million American households, Carried said in a statement. “Such a milestone is important because [HVAC] contribute an estimated 15% of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions.”
The company’s European subsidiary, Carrier Commercial Refrigeration, is a prominent supplier of turnkey transcritical CO2 refrigeration systems for food retail stores and industrial applications.
“The urgency of climate change requires us to be bold, to innovate and to disrupt – the future demands it,” said Dave Gitlin, Chairman & CEO at Carrier. “At Carrier, our focus on ESG is fundamental to our culture and our business, and we have an opportunity to make a profound impact on some of the most pressing environmental and social challenges of our time.”
“Expanding on three decades of environmental targets, we’re making meaningful progress against our 2030 goals around the areas of people, planet and our communities. Our goals are intentionally ambitious, because challenging ourselves to think bigger and be better is what we do every day,” Gitlin added.
The 2021 ESG report details how Carrier has committed to setting company-wide science-based emissions reduction targets aligned with the goals of the Paris Agreement. By 2030, Carrier aims to achieve carbon neutral operations and have reduced its customers’ carbon footprint by more than 1Gigaton CO2e.
One of the strategies adopted by Carrier has been to tie its executive incentive compensation programs to progress towards ESG goals.
The report also showed that Carrier has improved on the diversity front, with 31% of its of its global executives now being female, up from 20% in 2015.
