Leading global compressor manufacturer Tecumseh today announced the launch in 18 months’ time of its first CO2 condensing unit.

Tecumseh is developing the CO2 condensing unit “to extend its product range that is compliant with European regulations” such as the EU’s F-Gas Regulation and Eco-Design Directive, the Ann Arbor, Michigan-headquartered company announced at a press conference held at Chillventa today.

“Our new CO2 condensing unit will be simple, reliable and efficient,” said François Finet, product manager, Europe at Tecumseh. “We’re innovating on the architecture and controls side. We’ll put it on the market in the next 18 months,” he said.

Tecumseh said it was moving towards CO2 “due to its favourable features and areas of application in addition to other refrigerants”. It is exhibiting a prototype of the new condensing unit at its Chillventa booth.

“CO2, with a global warming potential of one, is a long-term non-flammable solution with a great volumetric cooling capacity,” the company said.

The Chillventa tradeshow, being held in Nuremberg, Germany from 16-18 October, is the world’s biggest gathering of HVAC&R technology manufacturers and enthusiasts. Almost 300 companies are estimated to be offering natural refrigerant-based technologies at the show.

“We want to make sure that our customers have the best refrigerant options available to meet their sustainability goals,” said Tecumseh President and CEO Doug Murdock, presenting the company’s new CO2 offering alongside its complete propane range of products including the new Infinee water chiller for commercial refrigeration.
