A number of manufacturers supplying components for transcritical CO2 (R744) refrigeration systems – including Emerson, Danfoss, Carel, Frascold and Energy Recovery – will showcase their technologies at EuroShop 2023 in Düsseldorf, Germany, February 26 to March 2.

As part of its exhibition – at booth E56 in hall 16 of the Messe Düsseldorf – Emerson will be presenting a range of its “integrated retail solutions” for commercial refrigeration, heating and cooling, with a focus on natural refrigerants and digitalization.

One of Emerson’s key messages for this year’s EuroShop – held every three years, the 2020 event coming just before the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic – is that CO2 is now an easy-to-use and cost-effective refrigerant in all climates.

The manufacturer’s CO2 scroll compressors can be integrated into a range of equipment from transcritical booster systems to individual refrigeration units, offering suitable products for stores of 600–2,500m2 (6,400–27,000ft2) whether centralized or decentralized refrigeration systems are used.

Emerson’s modular Copeland CO2 refrigeration unit is designed for small- and medium-sized applications and allows for a flexible configuration. It includes a detachable gas cooler and smart control concept for fast plug-and-play commissions, said the manufacturer.

For transcritical booster systems, which can provide medium- and low-temperature refrigeration, as well as heating and cooling, the Copeland CO2 scroll compressor can reduce the complexity and applied cost of the system thanks to its integrated dynamic vapor injection technology and smart control concept, said Emerson.

Emerson will also be presenting its broad portfolio of electronic controllers for compressor packs, refrigeration units and display cases, as well as its cloud-based capabilities for data management at EuroShop 2023. This includes its Dixell XeCO2 system, which connects and monitors a variety of high-efficiency controllers, and offers a complete and integrated service to optimize the performance of CO2 refrigeration systems and units, the company said.

According to the manufacturer, its product portfolio has been designed to help customers reduce their climate impact, comply with regulations and ensure food safety.

360° of efficiency

With a focus on end-to-end efficiency, Danish component manufacturer Danfoss is showcasing products that integrate heating and cooling systems to reduce customers’ energy consumption, heat loss and food waste.

“Energy-efficient, sustainable solutions for food retail have never been more relevant,” said Javier Lazaro, Global Sales Director at Danfoss. “We look forward to presenting our integrated solutions for supermarkets and convenience stores, which combine the latest CO2 refrigeration systems with heat recovery, heat distribution with hydronic balancing and our monitoring and management cloud solution Alsense.”

Danfoss will also be unveiling its new smart store, which is located in Nordborg, Denmark, and will include a complete portfolio of the manufacturer’s Smart Store products and services.

The store will be a “one-stop-shop for cost-efficient, plug-and-play energy and monitoring solutions to optimize operations, boost your bottom line and give you peace of mind,” said the company.

To enable further product development and testing, Danfoss will be launching an Application Development Center in the summer.

In addition to its in-person exhibition at booth C59 in Hall 16, Danfoss will also host a virtual exhibition, including dedicated webinars.

Celebrating 50 years

Italian manufacturer Carel (booth E01 in Hall 16) will be celebrating its 50th anniversary at EuroShop 2023.

The company will be presenting a range of its products and services, demonstrating how they can help improve the performance of commercial refrigeration systems while reducing their carbon footprint.

New for EuroShop 2023 is Carel’s Heos pro controller for CO2– and propane-based semi plug-in cabinets, which is designed to optimize equipment performance based on the actual load required and provides in-depth data on system operation.

The manufacturer’s new MPXzero and MPXone controllers for remote cabinets, which incorporate energy-saving functions, will also be on display at the trade show, as will its μRack CO2 control for transcritical CO2 condensing units and compressor racks.

According to Carel, all of its products and solutions include “a high level of connectivity, simplifying commissioning, monitoring and maintenance through specific software and dedicated apps.”

Flexibility of NatRefs

Frascold, an Italian component manufacturer, will be highlighting the flexibility of natural refrigerants at this year’s EuroShop (booth A39 in Hall 15) from the application of CO2 in food processing and cold storage facilities, to the use of hydrocarbons for retail cases.

“Companies like Frascold demonstrate on a daily basis how the use of climate-neutral gases leads to excellent efficiency, with maximum safety, whatever the context,” said Livio Calabrese, Frascold’s Sales Director.

The manufacturer will be showcasing its TK and SK3 ranges for transcritical and subcritical CO2 refrigeration, respectively.

Frascold’s Z-TK semi-hermetic piston compressor is the latest addition to its TK range and offers minimized leakage for distribution and storage centers, said the manufacturer.

New models of the SK3 piston compressor series, including the S-SK3, will also be presented at the trade show, offering customers a wider operating range. A highlight of the series is the three-way rotating delivery valve, which allows for a high degree of flexibility in system design and installation, it added.

“We are excited about showcasing Frascold’s innovations at EuroShop both on our stand and through our partners,” said Calabrese. “What do we expect from this edition? To set increasingly ambitious standards in terms of performance and sustainability.”

New partnerships

For the first time, U.S. pressure exchanger manufacturer Energy Recovery will be attending and exhibiting at EuroShop.

In addition to its booth (G33 in Hall 15) – where the company will be hosting a ceremony to celebrate its new partnership with Belgian refrigeration cooling rack and service provider Fieuw Koeltechniek – Energy Recovery will be delivering four presentations on its PX technology throughout the tradeshow at Italian OEM Epta’s Talking Epta Arena (Hall 15, C24–42).

Energy Recovery’s PX G1300 device is designed to improve the efficiency of transcritical CO2 systems.
