Commercial Refrigeration Services (CRS), a manufacturer of CO2 heat pumps and chillers based in Johannesburg, South Africa, opened its new training facility and showroom on 25 February. CRS is organizing two more inauguration events on 6th and 10th March, inviting industry professionals from all over Africa to its facility situated in CRS’s head office in Linbro Business Park, Johannesburg.
A future for CO2 in Africa
The new CRS facility will train technicians on using and maintaining CO2 systems in the African market. It will also be open to African contractors who want to gain experience in installing and maintaining these systems, with the aim of raising awareness and making African contractors more interested in using CO2 as a refrigerant.
“We at CRS feel that the training facility is the first step for the future of CO2 in Africa,” Groenwald, head of engineering, manufacturing and installations at CRS, told R744.com. With the training facility, he hopes to broaden the scope for CO2 applications in Africa. “Knowledge and experience are the barriers standing between CO2 refrigeration applications becoming the mainstream solution for the African market,” he said. He hopes that this easily accessible CO2 facility in Johannesburg will help African communities to learn how to use the technology.
It looks like a supermarket store, and verifies energy savings!
By measuring and documenting the energy consumption of the different types of CO2 refrigeration system, CRS will be able to show end users the benefits and savings of using CO2 refrigeration, and also to calculate the duration of a CO2 system’s payback period.
The facility is set up to resemble a small supermarket store and contains three 12-foot upright cabinets, two 8-foot upright cabinets, one 8-foot glass door freezer, one cold room with a capacity of 8 kW, and one freezer room with a capacity of 3 kW.The total medium-temperature capacity is 33 kW and the total low-temperature capacity is 7.5 kW.
The rack features the following compressor layout:
- Medium temperature: one 4MTC-10K, speed-driven Bitzer compressor and one 4PTC-7K Bitzer compressor.
- Parallel compressors: two 4PTC-7K Bitzer compressor (the lead compressor is speed-driven).
- Low temperature: one 2JSL-2K speed-driven Bitzer compressor.
- Gas cooler: adiabatic.
- Monitoring system by Danfoss.
The rack is designed for operation in three different modes: as a transcritical booster system, a transcritical booster system with parallel compression, and a transcritical booster system with parallel compressors and a gas ejector. Compared to the basic booster system, 10-15% of extra energy savings are expected from operating with parallel compression, and an additional 5-10% energy savings accrue from adding ejectors to the system. In the training facility, CRS will be able to verify the energy savings achieved by using the three different types of system.
