The vessel, called the “Roaldnes”, of Valderøya in Norway features a compact transcritical refrigeration system developed by Norwegian company Kuldeteknisk, specifically for smaller to medium sized vessels.
A total of five DSI vertical freezers using CO2 (R744) were combined with the new compact refrigeration system, where the cooling and the freezing compressors are mounted on one frame including oil systems, tanks, pumps and everything else needed attached within the framework. This system fits smaller or medium production units both offshore and onshore.
Increased Capacity at -50°C
The Kuldeteknisk system will allow the DSI freezers to work at -50°C and thereby increase the capacity of the freezers by 25-30%. The vessel will usually have the freezers working at -40°C but have the choice of freezing at -50°C when needed.
DSI plate freezers that use CO2 provide a high freezing rate and shorter freezing. In addition to saving energy, this fast freezing helps preserve the natural quality and freshness. DSI has placed over 150 CO2 freezers in the field which have returned excellent performance records.
An alternative to R22 in marine applications
According to Peter Christensen, Sales Director at DSI, the compact transcritical system from Kuldeteknisk is a modern alternative for smaller to medium sized coastal trawlers.
This is a really smart way out of ammonia or R22 systems that are phased out in most places [R22]. Coastal trawlers with small or medium capacity are now able to modernize their freezing systems. Combined with our plate freezers, they will have a high quality solution that will last for many years.”
Hundreds of vessels in-line for refrigeration system overhaul
The same company that owns the Roaldnes will be awaiting the tests result from the current installation to carry out overhauling the refrigeration systems of other vessels using R22. Other companies along the Norwegian coastline, encompassing several hundred smaller to medium sized trawlers, are cued-up to hear the results.
DSI freezers are used internationally in both marine and onshore applications especially for freezing fish, shellfish, meat, poultry, vegetables, fruit and more. The company’s products are known in the industry for their easy cleaning, ergonomic design and low maintenance cost.
