Emerson Climate Technologies, a provider of heating, air conditioning and refrigeration solutions based in Sidney, Ohio, will launch a range of reciprocating compressors for CO2/ammonia cascade systems for food processing, dairy, produce and cold storage warehousing applications.

The CO2-ammonia cascade system extends the capabilities of Emerson’s line of Copeland scroll compressors to offer additional refrigeration applications, and is expected to pave the way for the development of larger models used in industrial applications. As US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regulations continue to evolve, ammonia serves as an energy-efficient offering, using waste heat from a facility’s refrigeration system for other heat and air conditioning applications.

Tested in the new global hub for the HVAC industry

The new product was developed by Vilter Manufacturing LLC: an Emerson business that is part of the Emerson Climate Technologies business segment. It is currently being tested in Emerson’s recently opened Helix Innovation Centre at the University of Dayton, Ohio.

“Leveraging the research and development capabilities of Emerson’s Helix Innovation Centre, we developed and are in the final stages of testing a small CO2 cascade solution and building on that product line,” said Thomas Hoopes, director, business development, Vilter Manufacturing LLC. “Our team is using data from this testing environment with real operating conditions to make final tweaks backed by proven results before going to market.”

Emerson’s new Helix Innovation Centre is a nearly 40,000-square-foot facility opened in December. The centre seeks to act as a global hub for HVAC&R industry education and to facilitate a collaborative approach to innovation in the development of future refrigeration technologies.
