Italian OEM Epta will highlight its transcritical CO2 (R744) refrigeration technology, implemented through the Life-C4R (Carbon 4 Retail) refrigeration project, as part of World Refrigeration Day 2021.
Epta will illustrate the results of the project during a digital conference that will be held on July 1 at 3 pm CEST. Extensive information will be presented regarding Epta’s transcritical CO2 FTE and ETE technologies, as well as data and lessons learned from the seven pilot projects installed in Italy, Spain and Romania, with feedback from end users.
“The goal [of the conference] is to show, starting from the results of their application in the field, that it is possible to completely replace the traditional synthetic refrigerants HCFC and HFC with a natural refrigerant such as CO2,” said Epta.

Life-C4R, co-funded by the EU and coordinated by Epta, was created to accelerate the dissemination and implementation of very-high-efficiency CO2 refrigeration systems as a way of reducing GHG emissions and cutting energy.
The latest Life-C4R installation is at a Mega Image chain store in Sibiu, Romania – the first Life-C4R project in the country.
The store installed an Epta Eco2Small pack and an FTE 2.0 Full Transcritical Efficiency system. The installation is designed to reduce consumption by 10%, compared to an equivalent system with HFC, said Epta. That would save 38,573kWh/year which is equal to 41,787 fewer washing machine cycles in a year or 1,052 fewer small cars in 10 years.
Supporting students
The theme of this year’s World Refrigeration Day is “Cooling Champions: Cool Careers for a Better World.” Epta said it promotes this principle by supporting students and young professionals in the refrigeration world with numerous initiatives and scholarships.
“Supporting the training of new generations, so that they may avail of a high level of preparation, in a growing professional area, will allow [them] to respond effectively to the challenges imposed by continuous technological progress and by European and international regulations, increasing the success of the sector,” Epta said.
