German manufacturer Güntner has launched what it calls a compact and efficient CO2 (R744) air cooler (evaporator) suitable for applications like small-scale cold rooms in small grocery shops, restaurants and canteens.

The Mini COMPACT Air Cooler has a simple but efficient design, Güntner said in a post on its website. “Compared to conventional air coolers, its energy-efficient design – including optimized defrost heating – cuts costs by up to 30% for ventilation and 50% for defrosting.”

The CO2 air cooler is already commercially available in Europe. It is the smallest air cooler so far from Güntner, with the Mini COMPACT units being only 124mm (4.88in) high. The range includes models with capacities from 0.4kW to 2.1kW (0.11 to 0.6TR). The Mini COMPACT Air Cooler is also available for flammable refrigerants.

Each air cooler comes with a terminal box ready for connection and a three-year warranty, according to Güntner. The units are also equipped with a high-quality aluminum casing that is powder-coated to prevent corrosion and are available with adjustable-speed EC fans.

Easy maintenance

In addition to efficiency and the compact size, Güntner touts ease of maintenance and hygiene as some of the benefits to the new CO2 air cooler. “Users can take full advantage of the air cooler’s compact size thanks to its downward-pointing fans, which allow it to be mounted flush against the ceiling,” the company said.

“Maximizing the available cold-storage space isn’t the only benefit offered by this kind of cooling installation. It also improves hygiene by preventing dirt from accumulating on top of the air cooler,” Güntner added.

Cleaning and maintenance is made easy by a simple fold-away tray, which can be accessed by removing only two screws. The units also have a “small number of individual parts, smooth surfaces, and plug-connected fans,” which all help to minimize any downtime.

Güntner has seen increasing demand for its CO2 products in the last few years. In December 2019, the company opened a new factory in Sibiu, Romania, to increase production of heat exchangers for CO2 systems.
