Heatcraft Worldwide Refrigeration has launched the Kirby CO2 evaporator suitable for low temperature freezer applications and direct expansion systems. The evaporator fares well in terms of heat exchange efficiency, capacity, reliability and compressor displacement.
In July 2014, leading CO2 technology player SANDEN expanded its operations in Europe, opening a new branch called SANDEN Environmental Solutions, in France (Rennes, Brittany). The Rennes office is tasked with expanding the market for CO2 solutions in Europe, the Middle East and Africa, a move that signals SANDEN’s commitment to developing the market for CO2 solutions, including residential, professional and commercial applications.
According to a new report by Carrier Commercial Refrigeration almost two-thirds of large supermarkets from North and West European countries now use natural refrigerants in their stores, a trend driven by company-wide sustainability policies, and one that is outpacing EU legislation. The study, developed in partnership with market development company shecco, seeks to provide a clear picture of the key drivers for and against the adoption of sustainable refrigeration and refrigerant options.
At the 11th Gustav Lorentzen Conference on Natural Refrigerants, Johanna Gloël of GIZ Proklima presented on the potential for China to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions through the use of natural refrigerants, which would replace fluorinated gases in car air conditioning systems. The research suggests that GHG emissions in China could be reduced by 30% by 2030.
Adding to the growing knowledge base on ejectors in CO2 transcritical refrigeration systems, research presented by SINTEF at the Gustav Lorentzen 2014 conference (GL 2014) shows that a CO2 ejector refrigeration system with parallel compression can achieve around 25% energy savings compared to a standard R404A system in warm climates. SINTEF also analysed an integrated energy system with CO2 refrigeration installed in Norway, demonstrating a 30% reduction in energy

Olcina also discussed the company’s current and future projects for Southern and Eastern Europe, and Central and Latin America.
The FMI Energy & Store Development Conference in St. Louis gave retailers the opportunity to discuss their experiences with installed CO2 systems. Harrison Horning from Delhaize America / Hannaford, Jamie J. Meyers from Walgreens, and Rob Olden from GI Energy, discussed pilot transcritical CO2 stores in Maine and Illinois, whilst Benny Smith from Price Chopper talked about the first CO2 system in North America, installed in 2008.
