Weis Markets, a 206-store regional food retailer based in Sunbury, Pa., last week opened a new 54,000-sq-ft supermarket in Randolph, N.J., featuring the chain’s first transcritical COrefrigeration system, along with other environmental and energy-saving features.

The transcritical system – which the 106-year-old chain said “significantly reduces its carbon footprint and reduces overall energy usage” – was provided by OEM Hillphoenix, and includes Bitzer compressors and a Danfoss energy management system.

The store’s eco-friendly features also include LED lighting to reduce electrical needs; low-flow devices to support water conservation efforts; energy control through demand response programs to reduce power usage during peak days and to reduce the store’s load on the power grid; enclosed refrigeration cases to reduce energy use; and “advanced refrigeration technologies” to reduce refrigerant use by 60% when compared to conventional systems.

“We are very pleased to further expand our services to our second Morris County location, and to anchor and revitalize the Center Grove shopping plaza,” said Jonathan Weis, CEO for Weis Markets, in a statement.
